What is First Aid Kit?

A first aid kit is a collection of various types of supplies and equipment which come in handy while administering first aid to an individual or a group of individuals. Since first aid is defined as the temporary care which is provided to the seeker on the spot to suffice for time taken to reach the hospital, a first aid kit is not very detailed and features only basic products which may be required on the scene. First aid kits are a must everywhere like a school, office, a commercial establishment, a public place or a means of transport and hence the purpose of the kit varies according to the venue where it has been kept. Therefore, the first aid kit may be classified as being an emergency first aid kit, a first aid pack, a first aid dispenser or a van first aid kit.

A standard first aid emergency kit is assembled in durable plastic boxes, fabric pouches or wall mounted cabinets all of which are marked with a red plus sign to indicate the presence of a first aid pack. An important guideline in this regard is that the first aid packs should always be assembled in a clean and waterproof container so that the contents remain safe, moisture-free and devoid of infection. An emergency first aid kit should also be regularly checked so as to ensure that all the items within are in order and also to replace all those items which have been damaged or have expired. Although ready made emergency first aid kits are available nowadays in the market and are stocked with all the necessary items for immediate usage, a first aid pack can be built at home as well. All first aid packs must consist of a first aid book, adhesive bandages, and gauze-pads of different sizes, adhesive tapes, roller bandages, cotton, bandages, scissors and a single pen torch. A more detailed emergency first aid box may also feature non prescription drugs such as aspirin, anti-diarrhea medication, an antacid and a laxative. In addition, the first aid packs must also have latex gloves, sterilized tweezers and needles, moistened towels, a bottle of antiseptic, thermometer, petroleum jelly, safety pins and soap.

A van first aid kit is a first aid dispenser which is used while traveling and is often stored in the boot of the vehicle. The item which is a must in such a first aid dispenser is a fully charged mobile phone which can be used from anywhere in case of an emergency. Apart from the mobile phone and all the other usual components, a van first aid kit must also have new batteries which can prove to be extremely handy in case of emergencies.
